The beautiful Hacienda Cuch Balam is a dream for nature lovers and self-supporters. With 45 ha (113.64 acres), it offers sufficient space and the best conditions for growing various types of fruit such as limes or avocados, both for personal use and for sale.

An absolute highlight of the property is the spectacular open cenote in the garden, directly behind the main house. The vegetation around the opening of the karst cave as well as the many niches and crevices in the limestone walls offer an ideal habitat for numerous bird species. Especially the colorful clock bird with its characteristic tail feathers finds a home here. When entering the cenote via the recently renewed steel ladder, more than fifty of these elegant birds can easily be observed.

In addition to its function as a biotope and heavenly place to cool off, the cenote ensures the water supply for the entire residential area of the hacienda. It is therefore part of the property’s energy and water supply concept, which is geared towards complete independence. Power is supplied by a powerful solar system with batteries for intermediate storage of solar power. The energy generated is sufficient to supply the entire living area, including air conditioning, as well as the pumps of the outdoor area with electricity at any time. Just as the electricity is generated, the hot water is also heated by the power of the sun with an appropriate solar boiler. Various filters, including a UV filter, ensure that the water taken from the ground in the main house is of drinking water quality.

The living area of the Hacienda comprises three buildings. The central main house was built in the classic style of earlier haciendas and has the typical high beamed ceilings. These provide a comfortable indoor climate even on hotter summer days. Large windows also allow a great view over the beautiful garden. The main house has two bedrooms, a bathroom, and a large living and dining area with an open kitchen. There are also two casitas in the garden, each with a bedroom and a full bathroom. Due to their independence from the main house, the casitas are ideal for accommodating guests. An area for social activities has been created in front of the main house. It includes a pool, open spaces, and a bar with a dance floor. Another deep pool, which can also be used as a water reservoir, is located right next to the main house. A former Mayan house in the garden has been restored and now houses the technical equipment of the solar plant. In addition, it serves as storage.

LOCATION

The Hacienda Cuch Balam is located in a quiet, idyllic location in the area of the municipality of Cuzamá, in the middle of the so-called Cenote Ring. Cenotes are karst caves with access to groundwater. The Maya once considered the caves as entrances to the underworld and often used them as religious sacrificial sites. At present, the important function of the estimated sixteen thousand cenotes of the Yucatan Peninsula as the most important source of drinking water is undisputed.

In addition, some developed cenotes nowadays serve both tourists and locals as a delightful leisure activity. The access to the sometimes very hidden caves is often adventurous and a bath in their crystal-clear water is as spectacular as it is refreshing. The starting point of a three-cenote tour, which is particularly popular among tourists, is not far from the Hacienda Cuch Balam. A visit to the approximately 90-minute tour, during which participants are ” shaken” through the Yucatan jungle on a truck, a converted lorry pulled by a horse, is highly recommended. In total, there are about 30 cenotes open to the public within a 10-kilometer radius of the hacienda.

Mérida

The hacienda is easily accessible from the main road via a well-kept gravel road. Via the Carretera YUC 184, a modern four-lane highway, the center of Mérida can be easily reached by car in about 60 minutes. The prosperous capital of Yucatan offers the comfort and the interesting, lively lifestyle of a modern city. Visit the impressive historical center, dine in good restaurants, stroll down Paseo Montejo, Mérida’s famous boulevard, enjoy the numerous museums, theaters, and cinemas, immerse yourself in the Mayan culture or simply go shopping in one of the large malls. In addition, many large North American retail chains such as Costco, Wal-Mart, or Home Depot have at least one store here.
