Progreso, or Progreso de Castro as it is also called, is the main port city in Yucatán (México). It was founded in 1872 and built as the port of Mérida and was used primarily for the export of sisal fibers and fishing. The city received its epithet after Juan Miguel de Castro († 1884), the most important political advocate of port construction in the second half of the 19th century. With more than 40.000 residents it is by far the biggest city and the cultural center at the coastline stretching from Chuburna Puerto to San Crisanto, nowadays also called the “Yucatan Riviera”.
Progreso´s famous pier was built in the late 1930s. It is 6.5 kilometers long, making it one of the longest in the world. Today it allows the mooring of large container ships, and, to the delight of the residents and tourists, of large cruise ships.

In addition to its function as a port, Progreso is a very popular destination for tourists and, especially during holidays, for the residents of Mérida. The surrounding beaches are just as popular, as the remarkable Mayan ruins of Dzibilchaltún and Xcambó not far from Progreso. Its hinterland is a paradise for all nature lovers. The huge brackish water lagoon with its extended mangrove forest is home to a spectacular fauna and flora. Next to the majestic pelicans are the elegant flamingos probably the most popular and alligators the rarest species you will find out here.
The town of Progreso provides all basic amenities for a quick refresh of supplies. In addition to that, you are going to find numerous good restaurants and bars in the area, especially at Progreso’s attractive Malecón.
While the hinterland is known for its fairly humid climate, Progreso’s climate is, due to its coastal location, classified as semi-arid. There is little variation in average temperatures although the winter months from December to March are noticeably cooler. Precipitation is scarce throughout the year but is more abundant from June to October. On average, there are about 36 days with measurable rainfall.
Within just an easy 30-minute drive you are directly in the heart of Yucatan’s prospering capital city Mérida. Mérida offers all amenities and the interesting vibrant lifestyle of a modern city. Visit the amazing historical center, dine in fine restaurants, stroll over Paseo Montejo, Mérida’s famous boulevard, enjoy the numerous museums, theaters, and cinemas, immerse deep into the Mayen culture or just go for shopping in one of the great malls.
