Casa Catherwood is one of Mérida’s real authentic historical buildings. The colonial façade is simply gorgeous! The house used to be a museum lately, which was dedicated to Frederick Catherwood. He published in 1844 the book “Views of Ancient Monuments in Central America, Chiapas & Yucatan”. The book presented the astonishing images of the pre-Hispanic monuments of the region, which continued to astonish and delight even more than 170 years later. The museum displayed a collection of 25 of the magnificent lithographs.
Today, the former exhibition rooms on the second floor haven’t lost a bit of their great ambiance. They form now a self-contained suite, which is rented out to guests. The suite consists out of a living room, a bedroom as well as a bathroom and a beautiful roof terrace.
Downstairs you are going to find a quaint bookstore, equipped with fine wooden shelves as well as a café, which serves the finest home-made chocolate products. Two inner courtyards and a hallway with a high ceiling provide ample seating. A massage room, a bar, and a big kitchen, as well as two further storage rooms, complete this great offer.
